About Clear Waterproofing Membranes

Clear waterproofing membranes solve a specific and frustrating problem: how do you waterproof a balcony, courtyard or shower without ripping up the existing tiles? Traditional membranes go down under the tiles during construction. By the time someone realises the substrate wasn't sealed properly, the tiles are laid, grouted and impossible to remove without destroying them.

Clear over-tile membranes — products like Actflex 400 Clear and equivalent acrylic-urethane hybrids — are formulated to bond to glazed tile, natural stone and porcelain, cure to a near-invisible film, and stop water ingress through the grout lines and tile body. Applied with a roller in two to three coats, the finished system looks almost identical to the original surface, with only a slight sheen change visible in raking light.

These products are the go-to remediation choice for failing balconies and showers in apartment buildings, where strata budgets won't stretch to a full re-tile but the structure below is being damaged by water. Done correctly with the right primer and a compatible grout sealer, a clear membrane will give 8–10 years of additional service life and pay for itself in avoided repair costs within the first year.

Application is more sensitive than standard membranes — surface preparation, humidity and tile porosity all affect bond and finish. We supply the membrane, the test kit, and the technical guidance to get the spec right before the first coat goes down.
